The sun is shining, the sweet smell of autumn is in the air, and it is a perfect day for getting the little ones involved in the joys and adventures of gardening.

Work together and share the delights of gardening to produce something unique while enjoying some fun family time. Choose seeds together, grow something a little different, maybe red carrots, sprouting broccoli, or black tomatoes? Then, kit them in their own pinny and handy tools and create a safe play area. Grow a Bean Teepee for a hidey hole for them to sit under, which will also provide fresh green beans for dinner later.

Join in with the fun, have races with them in the wheel barrow and help them to dig up buried treasure in the form of vegetables. Work out clever defences against slimy slugs and encourage them to enjoy the great outdoors whilst getting exercise, fresh air and lessons in how the eco-system works.

Once you have introduced them to the basics, sit back and be amazed as their interest in nature comes to life. From planting the first seed, to seeing their pride and sense of achievement when they harvest their crops, watch their faces light up in wonder and their imagination and enthusiasm come to life. Watch as they play with mud and be enthralled studying creepy crawlies up close. You will not believe how many varied ideas in planting they come up with themselves resulting in very happy, muddy little kids. And later, continue the theme, let them choose something for dinner, with their bounty safely stashed in wooden troughs, trudge back up to the kitchen for them to help you cook up the meal.

What better way to introduce the idea of healthy eating to your children than the whole family planting, picking and eating their own fresh produce. And best of all, the TV is off.
