Almost half of us brits make a curry at home at least once a week, we consider it our ‘National dish’ and on average we spend £34,000 on this wonderfully delicious cuisine in our lifetime!

Therefore National Curry Week should be a major event in all our households. The event started in 1998 to promote the cuisine and to raise funds for charities concentrating on hunger, malnourishment and poverty.

As the event has continued to grow in popularity, more inventive ways of bringing people together for a curry have emerged, everything from ‘come dine with me’ style parties to poppadum eating contests have made this a fun and a taste bud tantalising occasion.

As we are now indulging more than ever on curries, we want to make sure you have all the tools you need to create a culinary masterpiece, we have put together a check list of basic ingredients to get you started.

Spices – The two most important spices used to create a curry are Cumin seeds and Coriander seeds, ensure you always have these kept in an air tight container in your pantry. Other spices usually included are Fenugreek, Ginger, Garlic, Turmeric and Cardamom but you can change these depending on the type of curry you are making.

Chilli – Another essential for any curry. The most commonly used chilli is Cayenne or finger chillies as they have a high heat level but a good taste.

Oil – Ensure you add plenty of oil when you begin cooking, a lack of oil will reduce the flavour of your curry and make it dry and gritty. Ghee is commonly used but Groundnut oil, Olive oil or sunflower oil will work well.

Onions, Ginger and Garlic – It is important to add these ingredients after the oil and try to use fresh.

Meat/Fish – The main component of your curry needs to be of the best quality you can afford as this will be the main ingredient remembered by your guests.

The sauce – Pureed vegetables, yogurt, cream or coconut milk are used to thicken the sauce and will vary on the type of curry you are making but it is always worth having a supply of all of these available when making any curry along with a good quality stock, homemade always tastes a little better in our opinion.
