Strawberry Season Is Upon Us!

Eating seasonally, when produce is packed full of flavour is without a doubt the best way for you to enjoy food at its best. Each month we will be highlighting what’s in season and also share one of our favourite recipes using some of these great ingredients. We hope that it’ll inspire you to get in the kitchen, start cooking and ultimately support great British food.

When you think of strawberries you automatically think about the great British summer, with the milder temperatures, longer days and the beaming sunshine – it makes the perfect conditions for enjoying British berries to their fullest.

Strawberries are at their best from early June until mid-August, although thanks to the increased use of plastic polytunnels, which provide the berries with a warmer, more protected environment, they’re now available most of the year.

Without a doubt, picking strawberries from a strawberry field is the best way of getting your sweet berry fix. There’s nothing better than tasting a strawberry, which has been freshly picked by your own hands, we guarantee you’ll be hooked and it’ll soon become a yearly tradition for you and your family. If you’re not up to picking your own, then strawberries can be found in almost any supermarket or groceries store. When choosing your berries look for plump, shiny, tender berries, with a good bright colour and sweet aroma, preferably with their leafy stalk still attached. You should always avoid, mushy or mouldy berries, which often occur when you buy strawberries in a punnet as the lower strawberries can get squashed during their transition from field to supermarket.

Tip: Most of us would keep strawberries in the punnet in the fridge; however a great way of prolonging the berries shelf life is by layering the strawberries on a plate in the fridge so they don’t crush one another.

One of the advantages of strawberries and why people look forward to their season the most is due to their versatility. You can add strawberries to almost any dish to give it a sweet, fruity contrast. Strawberries work really well in fresh salads, on top of puddings and desserts or with ice-cream, they are also ideal for making your own delicious jams and chutneys. You can do so much with a strawberry, but honestly they’re so delicious they can be enjoyed on their own with just a dusting of sugar and a dash of cream.

This month we’re giving you a delicious Eton Mess recipe to get you through the summer. Sweet berries, luxurious cream and crunchy, chewy meringue – what’s there not to like?
