Most would agree that home-made bread is what dreams are made of, however we continue to buy shop brought loaves. So what’s stopping us from getting in the kitchen and making our own?

The thought of making your own bread may be a little scary, but the benefits, even if it’s just the smell alone are undeniable. But there is much more to home made bread than just the wonderful smell! Making your own bread is also a fraction of the cost of a shop brought loaf, leaving some extra pennies in your pocket – which is always a bonus.

There are a few secret tips to baking bread, but once you’re in the know they’ll be no stopping your baking powers. 

  • If you’re bread has risen too much, then this is usually caused by too much yeast, so make sure you stick to the recipe.
  • If you’re bread hasn’t risen enough or not at all, then you have used too little or too old a yeast. Or you may not have used enough liquid in the mixture; if the mixture is too dry then it will struggle to rise.
  • All bakers know in order to get a good bake it’s all in the proving, your dough should have time to rest for at least one hour so the yeast has time to activate allowing your bread to rise in to a beautiful loaf. However if you leave your loaf to proof for too long then you run the risk of your dough collapsing during the rising or baking process.  
  • If you add too much salt to your dough, or don’t knead the dough for long enough then your bread will be hard and brick like.
