The Big Clean

The Big Clean

The last couple of weeks it’s really begun to feel like Springs sprung, daffodils seem to be popping up everywhere and I am finally traveling home in daylight! A sure sign though for me that Spring is well and truly upon us is the urge to clean the house from top to bottom and throw out anything that has a remote winter theme to it and replace it with bright, cheerful colours.

This weekend I couldn’t hold back any longer and the big clean got underway. I decided to treat myself to a selection of new cleaning products, including a beautiful vintage style antique cream housekeeping box from the Living Nostalgia collection along with some handy tools and gadget including foam cleaning brushes, a fridge deodoriser and a cute Flora sink strainer from Kizmos.

Each year I search around for tips and hints to make the job a little easier, to save you doing the same here are my favourite 6 that I stick to year after year.

  • An easy way to clean your showerhead if it doesn’t detach is to fill a sandwich bag with vinegar, submerge the showerhead, secure the bag in place with an elastic band and leave to soak overnight. Minimum effort, maximum shine!
  • Don’t spend hours scrubbing tough stains from your microwave, steam clean it first and the stains will wipe off easily, fill a microwavable bowl with around 500ml of water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and a few drops of essential oil and microwave for 5 minutes.
  • A great way to protect your floors for another year is to use a wash and wax combination floor cleaner, it leaves floors with a great shine and will protect them from stains.
  • Damp sponges harbour germs, give them a quick blast in the microwave, two minutes should do it and your sponge will be germ free.
  • To remove old candle remains from holders freeze them for a couple of hours , the wax will shrink and will easily pop out so the holders can be used again.
  • Freshen your mattress by mixing together baking soda and lavender oil in a bowl, sprinkle the mixture over your mattress and leave for half an hour in order for it to draw out any moisture. Slowly vacuum the mattress to remove the mixture.

This year I also decided to treat myself to some beautiful new tableware items to complete my spring look. Calico has a variety of brilliant white ceramic items with a subtle decal giving them a fresh and clean feel that really captures spring. The collection is timeless so will still work perfectly even if you decide to completely redecorate. I absolutely love how they brighten up my kitchen.

It took me all weekend but my house is now sparkly clean…. For a couple of weeks anyway ;)
