The 23rd April not only marks St George’s Day but Great British Beef week too! So why not host a roast for your friends and family to support Britain’s farmers and British beef!

Great British Beef Week was set up by a group of female beef farmers, affectionately known as ‘Ladies in Beef’, who are passionate about British beef. Their aim is to promote the quality of British beef and increase awareness of the Red Tractor mark on the food we buy.


The Red Tractor is an independent mark of quality that guarantees the food we're buying comes from farms and food companies that meet high standards of food safety and hygiene, animal welfare and use responsible farming methods. Above all it has traceability which means that every product can be traced back to a British farm. With the horse meat scandal, I’m sure you’ll agree this is becoming increasingly more important. 


Here are a few considerations to help you make the right choice when buying British beef…


  1. If you want to buy British beef that you know will meet high standards of food safety and hygiene then look for the Red Tractor logo.
  2. Take a look at the “EU Health mark”. This is an oval-shaped symbol found on all meat and dairy products. This identifies the EU member state of the processing plant which packed the products. But this is not the origin of the meat itself.
  3. Read the origin information on the packaging to check that the meat has been produced in Britain as a lot of our ‘native’ breeds of cattle, such as Aberdeen Angus, are quite often exported and bred abroad.
  4. When buying multibuy deals in supermarkets always double check on the labelling that all the packs you are buying are British as some may be imported. Again this will always be labelled on the packs under ‘Trace Code’ which lists the origin of the beef and what country it was processed in.
  5. If buying ready meals always check the origin information on the label on the back of the back. Be more cautious with processed food as a higher percentage of imported beef is used in these products.


In the past eating red meat was discouraged but beef can play an important role in a healthy balanced diet as it contains essential nutrients, key minerals and vitamins including Iron, Zinc, B Vitamins and Protein. So why not try making some new recipes using beef. With the weather starting to pick up and BBQ season almost upon us why not try making some of your own beef burgers. There really is nothing more satisfying than a homemade burger especially if they’ve been made with quality, fresh ingredients. They’re so quick and simple to make and everybody loves them! Once you’ve perfected the basic recipe you can have your own fun experimenting with different toppings and flavours.


We offer a wide range of meat mincers (with sausage maker attachments and hamburger presses) to make it even easier and also puts you mind at rest so that you can be certain what’s in your family's favourite foods!


Here’s a basic beef burger recipe from Jamie Oliver to get you started.


You will need

  • 12 cream crackers
  • 8 sprigs of fresh flat-leaf parsley
  • 500g quality minced beef
  • 1 large free-range egg
  • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • olive oil
  • 1 cos or round lettuce
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 1 red onion
  • 3-4 gherkins
  • 6 good-quality or fresh burger buns



  1. Place the crackers in a large food bag and bash with a rolling pin until fine and place them into a large bowl 
  2. Finely chop the parsley and add to the bowl along with the mustard, minced beef, egg and seasoning.
  3. Mix everything together well and divide the mixture into 6 portions. Using the burger maker mould each piece into a burger shape and drizzle with a little oil. Place all the burgers on a plate, cover with Clingfilm and place in the fridge to firm up.
  4. Heat a large griddle or frying pan and cook the burgers for about 4 minutes on each side.
  5. Add lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, red onion and gherkins to your buns and top with your cooked burgers.
