Your seasonal guide to which fruits and vegetables are ripe for the picking each month. This May make sure you get to feast on the season’s first asparagus!
Eating seasonally, when produce is packed full of flavour, is without a doubt the best way for you to enjoy food at its best. Each month we will be highlighting what’s in season and also share one of our favourite recipes using some of these great ingredients. We hope that it’ll inspire you to get in the kitchen, start cooking and ultimately support great British food.
It only seems like yesterday we were celebrating Christmas and seeing in the New Year, but somehow we’re already in May. This is the month when Great British flavours truly come into their own! Gardens, allotments and supermarket shelves will now burst to life with wonderful local fruit and vegetables.
It also wouldn’t be May without asparagus. But if you want to tuck into these savoury delights you’ll need to be quick because the UK asparagus season only lasts for about six weeks! Asparagus is so versatile and can be used to liven up any meal with its fresh and sweet flavour. Whether you gently boil them, slather them with butter, grill them or add them to salads or tarts, just make sure you get to enjoy as much UK asparagus as you can now whilst they are super fresh and of course delicious!
Like asparagus, new potatoes are at their best this month. Simply boiled in a pan with their skins on, they make a perfect accompaniment to a summer salad and unlike pasta and rice, this complex carbohydrate is bursting with Vitamin C.
